The quantity of oxygen consumed by biodegradation of organic materials in a water sample by measuring over a specific time period.

Testing for the amount of biodegradable organic material in a water sample by measuring the quantity of oxygen consumed by biodegradation of those materials over a specific time period.

Testing for the amount of biodegradable and unbiodegradable organic material in a water sample by measuring the quantity of oxygen consumed via use of an oxidizing agent such as potassium dichromate. The COD test results correlate to the BOD results and can be acquired in a short enough time to be useful for wastewater management.
