Common name for fish found mostly in the family Gasterosteidae. The three-spine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) is frequently studied.

Group of fish under the superorder Acanthopterygii, separate from the PERCIFORMES, which includes swamp eels, mullets, sticklebacks, seahorses, spiny eels, rainbowfishes, and KILLIFISHES.
