Persons with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency are susceptible to fava bean-induced hemolytic anemia because of the oxidative stress induced by compounds in Fava beans (thought to be vicine and isouramil). The same underlying defect can make affected persons susceptible to hemolysis induced by a number of mediciations.
