A species of facultatively anaerobic, Gram positive, cocci shaped bacteria in the phylum Firmicutes. This species is catalase negative, requires folic acid for growth in culture, ferments arabinose and melibiose, does not ferment citrate, does not reduce tetrazolium and is a lactic acid bacteria. E. faecium is a leading agent of nosocomial infections in humans.
