definition

Disease case is a person who is identified as patient in a given time and location, i.e. has confirmed, suspected or probable disease and participates in an epidemiological study or health surveillance.   In addition to disease case, a person who does not have a condition under investigation can be a control case.   Persons who are disease cases and control cases are all patients, because they are either receiving healthcare services or are registered within the system.
